The top list of activities to do for a 4- to 6-year-old child’s birthday
Finding yourself one afternoon with a cheerful gang of little friends and wondering how to keep them busy is the perfectly legitimate question all parents ask themselves when it’s time for those first birthdays.
Here’s a selection of activities that should delight toddlers: lots of great ideas and entertainment to do at home or outside. The ideal number of children at this age is between 4 and 7, and we recommend asking an extra adult to help manage the little tribe.
1. A “musical discovery” activity: in the middle of the living room or in the garden, the children can take part in various little games on the theme of music. A few examples: sound riddles (behind a stretched sheet, you can have them guess all kinds of sounds and instruments), a story with lots of sounds (to prepare in advance), musical relaxation...
2. “Home-made” activities: simple little activities that cost nothing and are within everyone’s reach do exist! A few examples: the famous musical chairs with your child’s favorite songs (guaranteed to be a hit and plenty of laughs), Chinese whispers, hidden colors (go searching for colored pencils around the house or garden), an “egg relay” (the child has to complete a course mixing speed and agility without dropping their egg from the spoon), etc.

Example: colored sand: a calm activity that children love and can then take home.
4. Duck fishing: a great classic to make yourself. A stick, some string, and a hook… it’s within everyone’s reach.
5. A puppet show: a few puppets (you can buy them or make them yourself) and a stretched sheet or a large cut-out box will do the trick. Prepare your story in advance so you’re not caught off guard when the time comes… guaranteed success!
6. Invite an “entertainer”: it’s possible to invite an outside entertainer to your home who can take care of the happy bunch: a storyteller, a fairy, a balloon artist, a face painter, a clown, a magician…
7. Cotton candy like at the funfair: Count €50 to €70 for the machine (to order online), and €15 for the tub to make about a hundred cotton candies. A huge, huge hit guaranteed!
8. Balloons that fly: a helium tank and there you go—classic balloons hanging everywhere in the room. And if they’re as beautiful as at Disneyland and each child goes home with their own, that’s pure class!
